Benefits Of Taking Fish Oil

“Hey doc, what can I take to get rid of inflammation?”

I get this question several times per day. As a chiropractor, I do not prescribe or promote any kind of pharmaceutical drug. Instead, I encourage the use of natural supplements and natural remedies to help promote healing without the toxic side effects. When someone is battling inflammation or joint pain, I always recommend taking a high-quality fish oil supplement. Research shows that fish oil with a high concentration of Omega 3 rich in EPA and DHA levels will help lower blood pressure, lower the “bad” cholesterol (LDL), increase the “good” cholesterol (HDL), and reduce inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation can be the underlying cause of many serious conditions such as heart disease.

For me personally, I know that I do not get enough servings of organic or wild-caught fish weekly. I actually don’t enjoy eating fish (just being honest). If you’re anything like me, you’re going to need to find a high-quality supplement to get in the required amount of Omega 3s. It is recommended to eat 3-5 servings of fish per week. Fish is an excellent source of lean protein and rich in nutrients. So, if you’re going to supplement the wild-caught fish with a fish oil, there are a few things you need to look for to make sure what you’re taking is good quality and will benefit you.
What to look for in a fish oil:
1. You want to make sure there is a high concentration of EPA and DHA. The higher the concentration, the more potent the fish oil.
2. Make sure there aren’t any additives that could reduce the efficacy of the fish oil. A lot of the “cheaper” brands have fillers. Not all products are created equal. Just because one brand is cheaper, doesn’t always mean it is better for you. The saying “you get what you pay for” applies here. This is your health, you want to be giving your body the best and highest quality ingredients to help you thrive.

For those of you who workout regularly or who train regularly, fish oil is extremely beneficial. Our bodies are put under a great deal of stress during training. Too much physical stress, such as the stress caused from an intense workout, can cause inflammation within the body if not managed properly. Taking fish oils will help to keep the inflammation down, reduce the joint pain, and promote more natural energy. If you notice that you’re chronically achy or uncomfortable after a workout (over and above the “good muscle sore”) then consider adding these in.
